NEWSROOM: THE LEADER OF FLAMING LIPS TEMPORARILY GETS THREE STRANGE NEW ROOMMATES

It was the morning of his 51st birthday when Wayne Coyne of the rock band Flaming Lips gets a knock on the door at his crib in Oklahoma City. Who was there? Three strangers presenting him with a lavishly wrapped copy of an album one of the strange visitor’s band had recently finished recording. What did Coyne do? He welcomed them into his establishment and asked them not to kill him. Nick Logie and Adam Ashe, members of a band called Telegram, drove 22 hours from L.A. with Logie’s girlfriend, Ashleigh Allard, to give Coyne a birthday gift. Along with a photo of the three, Coyne tweeted, “Some Weirdos showed up on my porch….They drove all the way from LA to bring me a birthday gift!!!”

The trio ended up spending four nights there with Coyne, sleeping on the couch, floor, and ceiling – well actually not the ceiling, I just added that recklessly. Anyway, the three made a song for the leader of Flaming Lips entitled “I’ll Never Hate Again” with Coyne helping out with the lyrics and vocals. “It’s a great, great track. Of course it will be a hit because I’m on it ... I’m only joking,” Coyne told Spin Magazine. “They were really cool and their time with me was productive and because the song came out of a great story ... [the idea that] these guys were either going to kill me or record with me."

The music presented to Coyne by his surprised visitors fitted well with Coyne’s taste in music. Logie and Ashe called the musical style “Thai-gaze,” which is a side project called HOTT MT (Hour of the Time, Majesty Twelve) – “Thai-gaze” is some alternative form of Psych-pop we are guessing. Moreover, the quartet, now with Coyne completely involved, made a music video as well! “Something just clicked,” Logie remarked. “He invited us in, showed us around his amazing compound. It was kind of a blurry weekend. There was a party, we recorded a song and the next day made a video. The whole thing was surreal. We're still processing it.”
