O.R.D.A.

O.R.D.A.
By Mia Barnett

O.R.D.A., born Kenny Jones, is a versatile hip hop artist exercising his talent in a big way. He hails from Baltimore, Maryland by way of ATL. He began his musical brilliance at the age of 9, mimicking such artist as LL Cool J, Rakim and Outkast. His no doubt love for hip hop has evolved into a rare intuition and mad skills as a writer, producer and entrepreneur.

O.R.D.A. first made footprints in the music industry as “Da-Man”. He experienced as a new artist the disappointment of being dropped from a promising new record deal and from this experience he learned the lesson that “friends” were friends as long as he was successful. Nevertheless, this tragic turn of events contributed to O.R.D.A.’s motivation to own his own business, pave his own path into the industry again and met new people.

During this time, O.R.D.A. was working as a licensed barber and while working as a barber, a salon owner showed him how easily the business could make $1,000 in one day; this contributed to the desire to own a beauty salon. O.R.D.A. did not let anyone determine his destiny and he decided that he needed order in his life, which initiated the change of his name from “Da-Man” to O.R.D.A., which means, Over Rank Dem All. O.R.D.A attended school for business marketing and opened a beauty salon named after his daughter, Salon Kariel, which has been running strong for five years. O.R.D.A. does not believe in being a starving artist, he says, “One hand washes another…, I finance my own dream , I believe in having a job and doing both, it requires you not to sleep, but you do what you’ve gotta do even if you have a child or children.” Who inspires his work ethic and hard-spirit? P.Diddy, of course.

O.R.D.A. ‘s new hot single, “Slow,” written and produced by the artist himself, describes the relationship between him and his daughter’s mother. He says that, “her desire to slow down was an excuse for her to date someone else.”   The smooth hip hop groove expresses the deep feelings that erupt when human vulnerabilities are exposed.   O.R.D.A. wants his listeners to relate to his music in a universal way and to be moved by the emotion it exudes. O.R.D.A’s independent label generated 200 spins with “Slow” in seven weeks on V103 in Atlanta, GA and five other radio stations in Georgia.

O.R.D.A. uses keyboard instrumentation and a drum machine to create his musical masterpieces. Studying the soul music from artist like Quincy Jones, Marvin Gaye and Donnie Hathaway contributes to his basic foundation in making music but he admits, that “creativity does not come in a can.” There is no recipe or specific formula.   He seeks to blend his own creative force with smooth beats and real talk lyrics that will make listeners come back for more. After listening to his music one comes away knowing that a true disciplined artist has been at work as the flow of his perfect beats balance with his unique poetic flow.

His message to other aspiring artist is to, “keep it real”.
