Carey Mercer, the Frog Eyes front man, introduces his third album, F*** Death, with the track “Beautiful Burning Desire.” The dark theme the song projects from Mercer’s gloomy vocals and chilling sounds makes the track inviting for tortured souls – tortured souls only. He admitted at the album’s press release that the album “is not romantic; these are deserter’s songs, coward songs.” He continued by confessing that he was “all for reassessing cowardice.” He meant every word.
My initial thought after listening to his introductory song, which emphasizes the idea to ‘run away,’ was the mental experience of someone contemplating between life and death. The abstract sounds and Mercer’s tone makes one believe that there is nothing worth fighting for or a reason to continue on. In a provocative, sensual manner, the track embodies the lust for pain and suffering – a vampirism state-of-mind. Ultimately, this song serves its purpose as being the track that promotes cowardice, self-pity, and self-destruction. With that said, go grab your poison of pleasure, if you have one, and reminisce or think about how awful you and your life is....Check it out!
